Gone Girl, released in October 2014, was one of the best psychological thrillers of the year. It was directed by David Fincher. The movie was based on Gillian Flynn’s (Screenwriter) best-selling novel of the same title. The movie has a great theme, good visuals and excellent sound/musical effects. It is a story perfectly told. The movie stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick, Tyler Perry, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, Carrie Coon and David Clennon.
The story is about the mysterious disappearance of Nick Dunne’s (Affleck) wife Amy (Pike). On their wedding anniversary, Nick comes home and realises his wife is gone. The living room shows signs of a violent struggle. The incident is reported and the frantic search for Amy begins. Who is behind the young lady’s sudden disappearance, and what could be the motive? Is Amy still alive? These are a few of the questions that popped up in the minds of detectives Rhonda (Dickens) and Jim (Fugit), who are called to help. The home of the couple is a crime scene and has to be turned upside down for clues. Amy’s belongings left behind are examined and taken in as evidence. In the wake of all this, Nick is just indifferent and detached. He is not a little grieved about the incident. This draws suspicion.
Investigation into the couple’s lives begin. The detectives find out that Nick has troubling financial issues. Amy’s diary also details an account of their crumbling marriage, an account that only points an accusing finger at Nick. He was unfaithful. He becomes the prime suspect. No one now trusts him, not even his sister Margo (Coon). Nick has to convince her of his innocence, which he finally succeeds. His good and intelligent lawyer Tanner Bolt (Perry) is firmly behind him all this while. The two set out to prove Nick’s innocence.
Amy on other hand, plays her former boyfriend Desi Collings (Tommy O’Hara), slits his throat, frames him for kidnapping her and returns home. Boney realises there are holes in her story and tries to question her. She manages to paint him incompetent, hence he is told to back down. Nick later realises that Amy tried to frame him for her murder because he was unfaithful. He decides to stay away from her, but a revelation from her that she is carrying his baby prevents him from doing so. Her motives are not discovered and she manages to cover her tracks from the FBI.
The movie is accompanied by a very good diction, with words chosen carefully to reflect perfectly the seriousness of every scene. This is one movie that has attracted good comments from critics. In the first few months of its release, it grossed about $ 368.1 million over its budget sum of $ 61 million. The movie’s star, Pikes, received nominations for best actress for her good performance. The movie won the Critics’ Choice Award. It has a runtime of 149 minutes, long enough to enjoy the thrills and suspense. If you have not watched it, get a copy.
